The public transport system in Melbourne is fantastic. Made up of buses, trains and trams it is the easiest way to get around. Melbourne public transport provides frequent and ample services in the city and around the outskirts. They also have late night services and free city circle buses and trams. If you plan to drive your own car, you have 3 months to update your license and car registration. To do this, you will need an appointment with Vic Roads Customer Service Centre. Make sure you have all the ID and paperwork required, plus the VIn and engine number for rego, and don’t be late. They won’t see you if you’re as little as 5 minutes late. You may have heard that Melbourne has road and freeway tolls. The good news is, it is easier than it sounds. You register for an account and you get an electronic tag to put in your car that automatically collects the tolls. You can find out more about how to do that at Citylink and Eastlink
Coming from Adelaide, you will see a definite price decrease in power cost. Melbourne’s energy is also a completely deregulated market, so shopping around for the best price can really pay off.
Your water provider is based on where you live, so no choices there. Be aware of permanent water saving laws in Victoria though. More information can be found here.
If you are bringing pets with you, you will find the laws similar to Adelaide. Cats must be microchipped and registered yearly with the council. You will need to check your local council for other laws specific to them. Dogs are the same, however they must be confined to your property and must be leashed in public areas.
Children can attend kindy for two years before starting school from the age of 3, but it is not compulsory in Victoria. Kindergarten is usually subsidised by the government so attending is free. Most people choose to at least send their child to the second year, at age 4 to help develop better social, mental and physical skills before starting primary school.
The school system in Victoria is highly regarded. Children that turn 5 before April 30th can start primary school at the beginning of that year. Children born after April 30th will start the following year. Classes are divided into Prep and Years 1 to 6. Secondary school students are aged between 12 and 20 years old. Usually you will be allocated the government school that is closest to where you live, but you can apply to other government schools and see if they have a place available.

Melbourne weather is well known for its fickle nature. It is said to be the place you can experience 4 seasons in a day.
Summer in Melbourne averages between 14°C – 26°C and the days are mostly dry. There is the occasional hot spell where temperatures can reach over 30 degrees, but after experiencing Adelaide summers, this may seem like heaven.
Early morning fog and mist is common for Autumn. This usually clears to fine days, sunny with the occasional light wind. The average temperatures are between 10°C – 24°C
If you’re a keen skier, you will want to head to the hills of North East of Victoria in winter. Most other areas don’t see much snow, particularly around Melbourne. It is cold, cloudy and rainy however, with frosty nights around 7°C. The average top temperature in winter is 15°C.
The craziest season of all is Spring. Each day varies dramatically, so you need to prepare for everything. It can be beautifully sunny one moment and then freezing cold and windy the next. October has the biggest rainfall in the year too. Average temperatures are 9°C – 22°C.
