Moving Checklist & Planning

To assist with your move, you may like to use our check list, as there are number of steps that can and should be taken to make the transition from one location to another flow more smoothly.

For a complete list of things to do when moving, see our blog post series: Moving Preparation

Our check list is also available as a printable document.

Planning your move

  • Purchase cartons for packing
  • If you have not yet disposed of all items that you do not wish to take with you to your new location, separate them from the items you are taking. There is no point paying to move these items simply to dispose of them at the other end.
  • Back up your computers, disconnect from printers and scanner, taping wires and leads together and securely pack them along with printers and scanners to keep them safe
  • Dismantle or disassemble all indoor and outdoor furniture if the pieces allow for this. Mark the items and retain nuts, bolts, screws and place in a labelled sealed envelope.
  • When moving to another state, you will need to either collect your medical and dental records or arrange to have them forwarded to your new practitioners.
  • Organise mail re-direction and then make a list of contacts that you need to notify regarding your new location.
  • Book final reading for electricity, gas, water and if renting, advise landlord or agent of your vacate date in accordance with your leasing obligation or as soon as possible.
  • Cancel all deliveries like newspapers and magazines
  • Make arrangements for your pets well in advance

The day before the move

  • Gather all valuable information ie birth / marriage certificates, passports and other documents, jewellery, travel documents and tickets plus money and ensure these items travel with you personally.
  • Clean out and remove food from cupboards, fridges, freezers.
  • Drain washing machine hoses leaving them to dry overnight.
  • Make sure you don’t have any uncollected dry cleaning, ironing, mending or prescriptions.
  • Although credit card payments are accepted by almost everyone, do have some extra cash available just in case.
  • Make sure your mobile phones are fully charged and keep you phone charger close by as you are likely to need them more frequently through the day of departure until your arrival at your new location
