Moving from
Melbourne to Adelaide

Congratulations on deciding to move to beautiful Adelaide.

You will be surrounded by beautiful wine regions, festivals and soft, sandy beaches

Interstate moves are exciting, but also can be quite daunting and overwhelming.

With this in mind, we have compiled a small list of ‘need to knows’ for the beginning of this new chapter.

Time Zone

Standard Time : GMT +9:30

(this time is a half an hour behind Victoria)

Daylight Savings time : GMT +10:30

Getting Around

Public transport can easily get you around the city and suburbs of Adelaide, so if you don’t have a car, it won’t be a problem. Adelaide uses a network of buses, trains and trams which include a free city loop bus and tram. Click for more information

Taxis and ubers are readily available too, and as most places take about 20 minutes to get to, these are an affordable option in most cases. If you prefer to get around in Your own vehicle, you’ll find the traffic manageable, even at its worst. Just don’t forget to register your car! You will need to do this within 3 months of your move to South Australia. Make sure you have your interstate registration certificate otherwise you will have to have a roadworthy assessment performed. For more information contact Service SA

So we have talked about getting around Adelaide, but what about things you need to know about your own home.

Utilities

Even though Adelaide’s cost of living is significantly lower than other states, the electricity rates are shockingly, the highest in the world. There are quite a few providers for electricity and gas however, and the energy sector is deregulated, so it can really pay off to shop around to find the best prices.

Water only has one provider which is SA Water.

Pets

As in Victoria it is a legal requirement to register your dog each year. The laws on how to do this changed in 2018 and guidelines can be found here.

This law change also included mandatory desexing and microchipping of both dogs and cats, as well as mandatory breeder registration. You must also enter your pet into the online directory. Your local council or vet clinic can help direct you if you get confused.

It is best to check with your local council if you plan to have more than one dog on your property. Some councils require you to apply for permission.

You will always need to keep your dogs on a leash in public areas, but there are plenty of ‘off-leash permitted’ areas, such as dog parks, beaches and certain reserves and walking tracks.

School

Children in SA are eligible to start preschool when they turn 4. Children that turn 5 before the 1st May can start primary school at the beginning of that year. Children born after 1st May will start the following year. Most primary schools in SA start from reception and continue through to the end of year 7. High school runs from year 8 through year 12. There are exceptions however, as more secondary schools are taking year 7 as their entry level.

From year 10, students begin studying for SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education). If you have a child around that age, it may be a good idea to look over how it all works here.

It’s also a good idea to have a look at school districts and zoning as it can dictate which schools your children may be required to attend.

Weather

South Australian summers are usually very hot and dry with extreme UV ratings. Average summer temperatures are 16.5°C – 30°C, but can often get up around 40°C. On a positive note, they have the lowest humidity in Australia and easily accessible beaches.

Autumn in Adelaide is beautiful. Especially in the Adelaide Hills. The weather sits between 12°C – 25°C with an occasional rainy day.

Winter usually has lows of around 8°C and an average top temp of 16°C. There is more rainfall during winter than other seasons, but Adelaide is still the driest city in Australia. The Adelaide hills can experience lower temperatures as well as frost and the very occasional light snowfall.

The average temperatures for an Adelaide spring are between 10°C – 22°C. The days are usually pleasant but can cool down at night.

Other fun facts

  • Shops close early, especially on a Sunday. Almost everything is required to close at 5pm on Sundays. Supermarkets are usually open until 9pm weekdays, but most other stores will be closed by 6pm.
  • You are expected to bring your own shopping bags or you can purchase them.
  • The Adelaide 500 car race takes place in March each year, right in the city area which makes getting around a challenge for 2 weeks.
  • The locals will want you to taste ALL the local produce.
  • You will be asked where you went to school…. Adelaide is that small.
  • Adelaide Zoo has Giant Pandas. A visit to see Wang Wang and Funi is a must do.
  • There are many interesting historical sites and tours around South Australia that cover all tastes.
